JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Training Specialist (TS) works closely under the direct supervision of the Training Coordinator (TC) and collaborates with the policy department. The TS is responsible for conducting transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex (TGI) cultural transformation training sessions for local LAHSA-funded Shelters, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Governmental Agencies and other agencies as requested. These training sessions will focus on multiple critical aspects ranging from fostering inclusive environments, expanding dominant narratives of gender, going over terminology, addressing conscious and unconscious bias, explaining TGI barriers and issues, and establishing effective standard practices and policies. These training sessions are vital in creating higher standards of care and increased access to social services to improve the support and assistance available to the TGI community. This position plays a critical role in building relationships with elected officials, multiple entities and organizations, and members of the TGI community to ensure the implementation of training and policy efforts from ideation to long-term performance. The ideal candidate will have outstanding communication skills, a deep understanding of TGI issues, a comprehensive knowledge of the local transgender cultural landscape, familiarity with social services sectors, and a diverse range of cultural practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Be available to work at least forty hours at The TransLatin@ Coalition office in Los Angeles.
Assess organizations through initial intakes and provide feedback and coaching support.
Ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences, including elected officials, attorneys, advocates, impacted communities, TGI Latin@s and other immigrant groups, supporters, and the public.
Set up appointments and organize TGI trainings with shelters, community-based Organizations, and governmental agencies throughout California.
Support the planning and executing of strategic campaigns as they relate to specific training and policy priorities.
Prioritize directly impacted communities and individuals and coordinate with campaign partners to track progress and win on the campaign’s goals.
Serve as a liaison to organizations and agencies trained to ensure continuous capacity building and support.
Develop equitable and reciprocal relationships with community organizations, networks, and community members impacted by LGBTQ+ discrimination, mass incarceration, and gender-based violence.
Works closely with research partners to ensure TLC’s research informs the development of local and statewide policy agendas and develops benchmarks to ensure adequate progress toward TGI competency training, campaign goals, and adjusting plans as necessary.
Provide strategic analysis and background for implementing TLC’s Policy Agenda in partnership with TLC’s executive and policy team.
Represent the organization in the community with funders, stakeholders, partners, and the people we work with in a respectful manner that embodies the organization's values and aligns with your job description and role on the management team.
Participate and organize community educational forums to obtain information that will support developing and implementing the Policy Department priorities.
Participate in TLC’s events, staff meetings, training, and staff development opportunities on an ongoing basis.
Other activities as required to conduct agency objectives related to training and advocacy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, public policy, or behavioral science-related fields or at least three years of working with TGI people, understanding their experiences and the policy needs of TGI people.
Proof of employment eligibility, valid California Driver’s License, and proof of automobile insurance coverage.
Updated tuberculosis test (annual requirement) – read, reviewed, and dated by a nurse practitioner prior to employment.
Ability to coordinate multiple projects & tasks simultaneously in a high-pressure environment.
Ability to master a wide range of information, take the initiative, be organized and strategic, and adapt and work in a team environment.
The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, both in English & Spanish, is always preferred.
Ability to work with diverse communities (e.g., multi-gender, ethnic, generation, monolingual Spanish speakers, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, substance, homeless, disabled, etc.)
Experience and knowledge of PC hardware and software (Windows, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel are a must).
Ability to conduct trainings, presentations, workshops, and coordinate policy-related activities competently.
Ability to respond quickly and in a timely manner to emerging issues as required and requested by any members of the management team.
Have the ability to work weekends or evenings and special events as needed.
Reliable form of transportation. Ride-sharing not considered reliable.
NON-ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Relevant community policy-related and cultural transformation training.
Experience and knowledge of MS Access and Google Suite.
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
Knowledge of specific policy needs and issues of TGI people.
Understanding how policy works & being able to articulate and draft written language for policy change.
Excellent writing and reading skills.
Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on Social Work, Public Health, Public Policy, Behavioral Sciences, and/or related courses or a minimum of three years working with TGI communities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
● This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Ergonomically safe office environment with desktop computer, desk, chair, and natural light from windows.
Occasional in the fieldwork, including but not limited to rallies, community festivals, conferences, nightclubs, and other outreach venues that the target population frequents. Must be comfortable with environmental conditions at locations, such as noise level, aggressive patrons, substance use, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing this job, the candidate typically spends time sitting, standing, walking, frequently driving, carrying (max. 20 lbs), lifting (max. 20 lbs), listening, and speaking.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The individual in this position must be able to accommodate any or all the following: constant distractions, interruptions, uncontrollable changes in priorities/work schedules, availability for on-call/duty after regular working hours, and exposure to inappropriate behavior and language of others.
