We at The TransLatin@ Coalition are devastated by the violent murder of Meraxes Medina, a beautiful trans Latina, who was shot and killed in South LA on March 20th. Meraxes is at least the sixth trans person to lose their life to violence in 2024, a tragic statistic that reflects the brutal reality faced by far too many in our community.
Meraxes' friends described her as unforgettable, with a magnetic aura that turned heads wherever she went. "She was someone you weren't going to forget," said her friend Jessica Fernandez. "She had this aura about her, and everywhere we went, people would turn around. She had so much potential. I was waiting for her to be an influencer and blow up." [lalgbtcenter.org]
Meraxes' potential was stolen from her in a senseless act of violence. But her memory, and the vibrant life she led, will not be forgotten. We mourn with her loved ones and friends, and raise our voices to demand justice.
“The murder of Meraxes is a reminder of the hate that we continue to experience. Our organization will continue to ensure that TGI people will continue to be empowered through service provision but also building the power of our community as a whole. We will not stop until all of us get to live dignified lives and are fully integrated into our society!”
–Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of The TransLatin@ Coalition
Meraxes' death is a stark reminder of the ongoing epidemic of violence against trans people, particularly trans women of color. Black and Latina transgender women are disproportionately affected by this violence, and their stories deserve to be heard.
The TransLatin@ Coalition calls on our allies to stand with us. We urge law enforcement to prioritize the investigation into Meraxes' murder and bring the perpetrator to justice. We demand an end to the systemic factors that contribute to violence against trans people, including discrimination, poverty, and lack of access to safe spaces.
Meraxes' light may have been extinguished, but her memory will shine a light on the ongoing struggle for justice and equality for all trans people. We will not rest until our communities are safe, and until trans lives are valued.
Here are some ways you can take action:
Donate to organizations supporting trans people of color.
Educate yourself and others about the issues facing the trans community.
Speak out against violence and discrimination.
Demand justice for Meraxes Medina and all trans people who have lost their lives.
Together, we can create a world where trans people can live freely and authentically, without fear of violence.
Rest in Power, Meraxes Medina.
