Policy and Advocacy

The TransLatin@ Coalition’s Policy Department advocates for the rights of Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (TGI) community members through strategic policy initiatives.

Our work includes:

  • Research, analysis, and advocacy to address systemic barriers in healthcare, immigration, criminal justice, and discrimination.

  • Collaboration with policymakers at the local, county, state, and national levels to promote inclusivity and equity.

  • Community education and mobilization to amplify TGI voices in legislative and policy-making processes.

Amidst rising anti-trans legislation, our goal is to both protect the community and push forward policies that ensure TGI individuals can thrive.

Fighting for Our Rights, Building Our Future

TLC advocates for political action to secure rights long denied to our community, including education, healthcare, employment, and the ability to live with dignity and without fear of attack.

TGI Wellness and Equity Initiative

Securing Historic Funding & Advancing Advocacy in Los Angeles County

The TransLatin@ Coalition (TLC) led the TGI Wellness and Equity (TGIWE) Initiative, a community-driven advocacy campaign that secured a historic $7 million allocation for TGI communities in Los Angeles County. The funding, approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in November 2024, will be managed by the LA County Department of Public Health to provide linkage to care, service coordination, and infrastructure support for community-based organizations.

Advocacy and Policy Leadership for Immigrant and Incarcerated Communities

The TransLatin@ Coalition leveraged our expertise and work as a Trusted Messenger and stakeholder, as Co-Chair of the Immigrants Are LA Coalition; participating in various gatherings, listening sessions, and briefings advocating for county funds to be distributed to assist immigrant housing and worker rights and provided insight into the transgender, gender-expansive, and intersex immigrant perspective.

As part of ReImagine LA, we attended policy and steering committee meetings and advocated for prison closures and the immediate release of incarcerated girls and gender-expansive youth in probation camps that are out of compliance. We collaborated with other organizations to push the County toward a more direct and immediate implementation of Measure J, ushering in care first, jails last approach.
