SB-357 signed into law

The TransLatin@ Coalition celebrates the victory of SB-357 which will eliminate a piece of legislation that was specifically created to criminalize trans women and members of the LGBTQ community, particularly those who are Black and Brown. We are grateful that Governor Newsom did the right thing and signed this historic piece of legislation despite the strong opposition by conservative groups and anti-trafficking groups who use the anti-trafficking narrative to criminalize sex workers.

“This is a piece of legislation that will ensure that people are safe on the streets and that we do not continue to be harassed and oppressed by law enforcement.”

-Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of The TransLatin@ Coalition.

We believe in the liberation of our peoples and this is a step in the right direction towards that. Thank you to our partners and to state Sen. Scott Wiener for pushing this hard-to-do legislation that took two long years to make it a reality.
