AB 1487 Moves Forward—A Win for Our 2TGI Family!

We’re celebrating a powerful victory! AB 1487 has passed the Assembly Health Committee, bringing us one step closer to a more just and inclusive future for our Two-Spirit, Transgender, Gender Nonconforming, and Intersex (2TGI) communities.

Honoring Two-Spirit Identity, Centering Our Voices

With AB 1487, we’re not just renaming a fund—we’re reclaiming space. The bill changes the name of the TGI Wellness and Equity Fund to the Two-Spirit, Transgender, Gender Nonconforming, and Intersex Wellness and Equity Fund, finally recognizing and honoring our Two-Spirit relatives. This is about visibility, respect, and cultural healing. This is about naming us—all of us.

Investing in Our Future, On Our Terms

This bill doesn’t stop at symbolism—it puts action behind the promise of equity. AB 1487 expands access to grant funds for programs that meet the real needs of our community:

  • Workforce development for 2TGI folks trying to thrive in a system that wasn’t built for us

  • Resettlement and integration support for 2TGI immigrants and asylees navigating survival in a new land

  • Diversion programs and outreach for our 2TGI youth, offering them opportunity instead of incarceration

These changes are life-affirming. These programs are life-saving.

Mental Health Is Health—Period.

For our community, mental health care isn’t a luxury—it’s survival. AB 1487 boldly expands the definition of health care to include mental health support, an overdue recognition of what our people have always known: you can’t have health without healing.

Our Fight, Our Future

This bill is the result of grassroots power, relentless advocacy, and community love. It’s one step closer to building the future we envision—one where 2TGI people are not just surviving, but living fully, freely, and with dignity.

We at The TransLatin@ Coalition are proud to stand at the front lines of this movement, fighting for policies that reflect the needs and brilliance of our community.

AB 1487 passed the Health Committee—and we’re just getting started.

Let’s keep pushing. Let’s keep rising. For our ancestors. For our youth. For all of us.
