We'd like to extend a massive congratulations to Rita García, our Violence Prevention Manager, and Arburtha Franklin, our Reentry Programs Coordinator & HIV Testing Counselor, on their appointments as commissioners to the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV (COH)! Their inclusion marks a significant step towards ensuring transgender voices are heard at the forefront of the fight against HIV/AIDS and STDs.
The COH plays a vital role in our community. As the local planning council for HIV/AIDS and STD services, they oversee the planning, allocation, coordination, and delivery of vital programs. A diverse and inclusive commission is crucial for ensuring these services reach the people who need them most.
Transgender individuals are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), transgender women, particularly transgender women of color, face a nearly 13 times higher risk of HIV compared to cisgender women. Representation on the COH allows transgender voices to shape strategies and programs that address the specific needs and barriers this community faces.
Rita and Arburtha's appointments are a testament to the ongoing fight for equality and representation in healthcare. Their presence on the COH will undoubtedly lead to more effective and culturally competent services for transgender Angelenos living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact Rita and Arburtha will have on the COH and the broader fight against HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County.
